Jim White

Senior Research Geophysicist and CO2 Storage Project Manager

British Geological Survey

Jim White leads BGS’s activities supporting commercial CCS Development in the UK, working closely with storage licence holders to progress CO₂ storage deployment. He leads technical reviews of Early Risk Assessments, site appraisal studies and storage permit applications, alongside managing targeted research to characterise the subsurface and inform risk assessments. Through this work, he maintains close engagement with regulators and key stakeholders.

Jim specialises in geophysical monitoring and seismic analysis, with extensive experience in the generation, processing and interpretation of complex seismic datasets. He has particular expertise in the development and application of large synthetic seismic datasets to understand the limits of CO₂ detectability, contributing to major European CCS projects. His work often integrates time-lapse seismic analysis with observations from flagship CO₂ storage sites such as Sleipner and Snøhvit, advancing understanding of plume behaviour and monitoring performance.

He leads the multi-centre NERC-funded MOET project, addressing strategic challenges associated with co-located offshore energy systems, and held roles in international research initiatives, including ERA-ACT Pre-ACT, BIG-CCS and the Norwegian CCS Centre (NCCS), supporting innovation in CO₂ storage monitoring and deployment.
